Academe is fixated on disciplinary depth and specialization. People
have a tendency to gravitate to their interests and focus their learning toward one most-comfortable academic discipline. If successful enough, they
become experts (specialists) in their chosen discipline. In this disciplinarybased academic world, the more advanced a student's learning, the more
narrow (but deeper) are her interests and skills. The common phrase is that
she becomes "an inch wide and a mile deep."
