Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.
The package contains a paperback copy of Curious George Learns the Alphabet, originally published in 1963, plus a CD narration. A perfectly rational reading lesson for young monkeys and children alike is precipitated by George's curiosity about the little black dots in one of his friend's books. The man with the yellow hat arrives as George begins to experiment. Nice to tear? Good to eat? No. One reads a book. George's teacher works at his big sketch pad and easel, and knows exactly when to summarize things: making a word out of A, B, and C. George remembers riding in a cab, doesn't he? And so the alphabet proceeds. Rey's word choices and illustrations are perfectly keyed to George's life experiences. He can eat an apple, but an alligator can eat him. The big L is a lion, the small l, a lean lady eating a lollipop. George loves lollipops. As for doughnuts, well, the bakery story interlude proves how dangerous a little learning can be! It is no surprise the paperback is currently in its 50th printing. The story works. The attached CD, read by Wendie Sakakeeny, adds a sprightly background tune to the first cut (with page-turning prompts) as well as the second cut (without prompts).
